On Friday, April 13th, 2018 there was a T.E.A.L.® Press Conference at Grand Army Plaza to commemorate T.E.A.L.®’s “10 Years of Amazing” and T.E.A.L.®’s upcoming gala where the lobby of the Brooklyn Museum would be lit teal. News 12 was able to speak to both CEO & Co-Founder Pamela Esposito-Amery, and Majority Leader of NY City Council Laurie Cumbo about the importance of early detection for ovarian cancer, and the many things that T.E.A.L.® has accomplished since its founding 10 years ago. On Wednesday, April 11th, 2018, Marketing Associate Paulina Rugart spoke with students about opportunities at T.E.A.L.®, mainly those which involve social media and design. The fair was a great opportunity to meet other companies and nonprofits, as well as to raise awareness about T.E.A.L® as a foundation, the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer, and engage the public about our 10th Annual Brooklyn T.E.A.L.® Walk/Run™ coming up in September.
T.E.A.L.® attended a job and internship fair at St. Josephs College in Brooklyn, NY on Wednesday, April 11th, 2018. There were over 100 students and community members at the fair, and T.E.A.L.® provided more information about the work that Tell Every Amazing Lady® is doing and how to get involved through internships or volunteering.

On March 16th, 2018, T.E.A.L.® participated in an Internship and Job fair at Brooklyn College. Caleigh, a Girl Scout in East Rockaway Long Island, has been spreading awareness on behalf of T.E.A.L. ® throughout her school. She describes the initiatives in her own words below:
“For my Girl Scout Gold Award I wanted to keep educating people. A topic that many need clarification on is the topic of cancer and how to prevent it and get help. Since I had at least 6 people close to me who died of cancer since 2009, this was a topic that was important and sensitive to me. Of those included were my father who passed away of colon cancer in 2016 and my girl scout leader who passed of ovarian cancer last year. This project is dedicated to them. So what better way than to educate the youth? I came up with the idea of presenting slideshows to different grades in my high school.
I attend East Rockaway Jr./Sr/ high school which holds grades 7-12 because of how small our town is. So far I’ve presented to four classes full of 9th, 10th and 12th graders. I intend on presenting a lot more. I contacted T.E.A.L. ® for donations because I knew how dedicated they were. I attended their walk this past September in Brooklyn and loved it. I attended in honor of my girl scout leader Toni Wilson who died recently of Ovarian cancer. We walked on a team named ‘Toni’s Angels.’
As another way to spread information about the importance of cancer screening I made pamphlets. I’m going to leave some at my local library and some at primary care doctors offices. The pamphlets explain why you should get screened for cancer, and what cancers offer early screening such as mammograms, blood tests and colonoscopies. For even more information I will be creating an instagram and blog possibly on tumblr. The instagram page will include reminders on health related issues and cancer fighting foods. My blog will be a safe haven for kids who deal with cancer in their family. I know when my father was ill with stage 4 colon cancer, I had no one who understood or really related to my situation besides my family. I want others to know that they are not alone and always have an ear to listen. This blog can also be an outlet for people suffering through chemotherapy.
I hope this project helps younger generations take charge of their health and listen to the success stories out there.”

Students from St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy, along with their art teacher Ms. Boggiano created a beautiful winter/holiday display for our windows to help us raise awareness about ovarian cancer. Their handmade artwork makes use of the color teal, which is the color that symbolizes ovarian cancer. The work of these students helps us bring more attention to the presence of our T.E.A.L.® Ovarian Cancer Community Center to the Windsor Terrace/Park Slope Community. On December 5th, 2017, Tell Every Amazing Lady® attended the Tannenbaum Helpern Syracuse & Hirschtritt’s Women’s Initiative Event at the Roger Smith Hotel in NYC. During this event, T.E.A.L.® was able to spread awareness about ovarian cancer while exploring products from featured women-owned businesses. It was a pleasure being able to connect with women entrepreneurs and professionals from all over New York. On Sunday, December 3rd, 2017, T.E.A.L.® participated in St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy Holiday fair to sell some merchandise and spread awareness information to the Windsor Terrace Community. About 300 people were in attendance and full of holiday spirit, including Santa!

T.E.A.L® CEO Pamela Esposito-Amery and T.E.A.L® Youth Ambassador Kiarra Carrion were special guests on Bronxnet’s “Open” program with Dr. Bob Lee on November 27th, 2017. T.E.A.L® was chosen as a featured charity for Giving Tuesday for their amazing work on Giving Tuesday and throughout the year. Pamela and Kiarra spoke about the need for an organization focusing on ovarian cancer, and how they both had personally been affected by the disease. Kiarra mentioned the goal of this year’s Giving Tuesday- to ensure that the T.E.A.L® Youth Ambassador program continues to grow, empowering young women and men to teach their communities about the disease. T.E.A.L.® was honored to be a guest at the Marine Park Civic Association board meeting on November 21st, 2017. The meeting updated community leaders on what is going on in the area, and what to expect coming up in 2018. As an organization that had its start in Marine Park, with both of T.E.A.L.®’s co-founders Louisa and Pamela growing up in the neighborhood, it was a great opportunity to return to the place where it all started. T.E.A.L.® CEO Pamela Esposito-Amery gave a presentation about the work that T.E.A.L.® does throughout Brooklyn and beyond, focusing on the importance of family history and genetics and how it can sometimes play a role in the early detection of ovarian cancer.
T.E.A.L® was at the finish line volunteering and cheering for the amazing runners at this past weekend’s 4th annual NYCRUNS Queens Half Marathon on Saturday, November 18th, 2017. T.E.A.L.® was busy all week handing out educational materials to the thousands of runners at packet pickup while spreading cheer at the finish line on the day of the event. T.E.A.L® was invited to present at Wyckoff Hospital in Brooklyn, NY on November 21st, 2017. T.E.A.L® CEO Pamela Esposito-Amery and Programs Associate Melissa Belasoto spoke about the signs, symptoms, and risk factors of ovarian cancer to women’s health program leaders and general affiliates of Wyckoff Hospital. It was a great day of engaging Bushwick residents, and connecting with organizations and programs that help citizens throughout New York City. As part of T.E.A.L.®’s 2017 Medical Research Program, researchers at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (Co-PIs Dr. Tian-Li Wang, Dr. Tom Pisanic, and Dr. Amanda Nickles Fader) were awarded $10,000 towards their project Developing a microfluidic DNA methylation assessment platform for early noninvasive detection of ovarian cancer. This project is working to identify tumor-specific alterations in early precursor lesions of ovarian cancer and to exploit these alterations as biomarkers to detect ovarian cancers at early and low-volume stages.

Methylomic analysis identifies tumor-specific alterations in early precursor lesions of ovarian cancer.
The goal of our study is to discover epigenetic alterations present in early precursor lesions of ovarian cancers and to exploit these alterations as biomarkers for early detection of this disease. Considerable effort has been made towards developing tests of protein and genetic biomarkers, including CA-125 and TP53 mutations, for early detection, but these approaches have yet to demonstrate sufficiently robust performance to warrant recommendations for use in general screening. We rationalize that epigenomic alterations which lead to gene silencing can occur during or even prior to the development of precursor lesions. We will therefore use these epigenetic markers to refine current genetics-based cancer detection tools. Our hope is that by combining genetic and epigenetic markers, we will be able to develop a detection modality with greatly enhanced sensitivity and specificity. Toward this goal, we assembled a multidisciplinary team at Johns Hopkins consisting of investigators, Dr. Thomas Pisanic (biomedical engineering), Dr. Amanda Fader (gynecology and oncology), and Dr. Tian-Li Wang (cancer genetics).
As part of T.E.A.L.®’s 2017 Medical Research Program, T.E.A.L.® awarded OCRFA $20,000 to fund research by Dr. Venkatesh Krishnan of Stanford University. This project, called Role of CCL15/CCR1 Axis in Ovarian Cancer Colonization of Omentum, will be investigating how the omental microenvironment contributes to the development of high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC). The research team will be developing strategic therapeutic interventions that target precursor lesions and the microenvironment.
As part of T.E.A.L.®’s 2017 Medical Research Program, Dr. Maria Barbolina of University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy was awarded $35,000 to fully fund her project: Targeting Fractalkine Receptor To Increase Sensitivity to PARP Inhibitors. This proposal aims to test a new combination of drugs in a new treatment. The goal of this treatment is to prevent formation of recurrent metastatic lesions, reduce growth of metastatic tumors, and extend lives.

Inhibitors of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARPi) have proven effective in targeting cancer cells with deficiencies in homologous recombination DNA repair mechanisms. Our studies demonstrated that the chemokine receptor for fractalkine (CX 3 CR1) is expressed in the majority of serous ovarian carcinoma cases, and its expression correlates with patients’ survival. We have also demonstrated that reduction of CX 3 CR1 expression makes cells deficient in homologous recombination and sensitizes them to a PARPi olaparib. In this project we will determine the role of CX 3 CR1 downregulation in sensitization to a panel of PARPis, including olaparib, rucaparib, niraparib, and veliparib.
